The IRU-initiated All India Smart Move High Level Group, composed of operators, representatives associations and other mobility stakeholders, met on 23 November 2015 in New Delhi to lay out a solid way forward on smart urban mobility in Indian cities.
The work of the High Level Group on smart urban mobility will form part of a clear action plan on safe, green, affordable collective sustainable transport for India, identifying clear policy recommendations to substantially increase the use of buses, coaches and taxis by 2030. As well as efficient & sustainable city bus services, and the role of taxis, the group will also address intercity coach services and group tourism by coach.
The meeting focused on how this objective could be achieved through the following scheme addressing all relevant aspects:
Kulwant Singh, Regional Advisor, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), said, “Smart urban mobility will play an essential role in ensuring not just sustainable collective passenger transport in India’s cities but also help transform the cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Only by bringing together all the key players can we hope to find the solutions that we need”.
Sonila Metushi, leading IRU’s work on the All India Smart Move High Level Group said, “The work of this unique public-private group has started in a constructive and efficient manner. The topics our work addresses are extremely important for sustainable passenger transport in India and generate significant interest with key stakeholders. We expect the final results to be delivered by the end of 2016”.
