18 November 2013 – A BRT system could help the Indian State of Tamil Nadu realise its goal of an increase in the mode share of public transport from the present 27% to 40%, according to regional transport analysts. BRT could also help reduce the number of accidents.
To achieve nearly two-thirds of all motorised trips by public transport, Chennai could learn from other Indian cities’ examples that have faced key challenges such as rapid growth, socio-economic changes, reduced transit patronage, resource mobilisation and providing mobility options. However, dedicated bus lanes and a well-planned BRT network are truly a Smart Move that can bring significant travel benefits to everyone.
