Bus services exclusively for women in India

Last year, India saw a number of women-only bus services being launched across the country.

“Pink Express” is a special bus service taking women from Lucknow to Delhi. The buses are air-conditioned and equipped with WI-FI and a Vehicle Tracking System. The female passengers are also able to charge their phones and laptops during their journey. Women working for IT companies in Madhapur and Gachibowli also benefit from women dedicated shuttle services for free. SHE shuttle was launched together with the SHE shuttle app that informs users on the location of the bus, stops and schedule. Women security guards are assigned both on “Pink Express” buses and SHE shuttles. The significant number of female commuters in Delhi was also taken into account by a startup company. ZipGo also developed a membership-based exclusive bus service for women in Delhi NCR. Drivers are chosen carefully and buses can be booked and tracked easily.

These women exclusive bus services must make women feel safer and encourage them to use the bus more often. Women’s safety in collective transport is also a matter tackled by the IRU-initiated All India Smart Move High Level Group.
