Policy-makers, transport industry leaders, cities and public transport customers unite forces through a permanent public-private Citizens’ Mobility Forum, with the aim to drive sustainable mobility and travel across the EU by doubling the use and market share of collective passenger transport in the EU by 2025.

18 October 2013 - The EU public-private Citizens’ Mobility Forum was born today in Kortrijk, Belgium, as one of the 16 recommendations made by the EU public-private Smart Move High Level Group (HLG), which were submitted to the European Commission Vice President in charge of Transport, Siim Kallas, on 15 May 2013.
Isabelle Durant, Vice President of the European Parliament (Green), said, “The Smart Move High Level Group generated a series of concrete and thought-provoking ideas and policy-recommendations aimed at putting bus and coach travel higher on the EU’s political agenda and at setting out a manner of roadmap for this vital industry’s future development. The creation of a permanent Forum, bringing together all stakeholders to double the use and market share of collective passenger transport in the EU by 2025, is a good way to make EU passenger transport greener through appropriate implementation strategies.”
Immediate objectives of the Citizens’ Mobility Forum are to support the practical implementation of recommendations made by the Smart Move High Level Group, stir a wider debate, and come up with new concrete proposals to double the use and market share of collective passenger transport in the EU by 2025.
The Citizens’ Mobility Forum — whose Members include MEPs, representatives from other EU institutions, European citiescustomers, organisations for people with disabilities, and bus, coach and travel industry leaders — will be fully constituted by the end of 2013 with a permanent Secretariat. It will meet at least four times per year and benefit from expertise channeled through task forces or ad-hoc expert groups created on specific topics.
Gesine Meissner, Member of the European Parliament Transport Committee, said,"With the Clean Power for Transport Package we are very much talking about alternative fuels as electricity, gas or hydrogen, which in the future would make traffic less pollutant and noisy. This would mainly be a relief for urban areas. But we shouldn’t forget obvious solutions, which could take effect even faster, like increasing the share of collective passenger transport."
