Major automaker begins testing of automated buses

Daimler’s first self-driving city bus has been recently seen on the road in the Netherlands. The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus was tested on a 20 kilometre-long route, part of Europe’s longest BRT, in Amsterdam.

The Future Bus with CityPilot can drive at a speed of up to 70 km/hour being able to recognise obstacles and pedestrians on its way and to communicate with traffic lights systems. It also stops automatically at bus stations where it opens and closes its doors for passengers. No steering, accelerating and no brake pedal were used during the journey. However, the driver can intervene and take control at any time if needed.

The company claims that this is the first automated city bus to operate in a real-life traffic situation.
