Home News Moscow awarded for making ‘smart move’ to tackle traffic gridlockMoscow recently won the International Transport Forum’s 2016 Transport Achievement Award for its exemplary approach to improving traffic conditions, including through its investment in bus transport in the Russian capital.
Over the past 5 years, Moscow’s Transport Department has implemented measures fully in line with the Smart Move campaign to double the use of buses and coaches. These notably include adding more than 5,000 new buses to the city’s fleet, building over 230 kilometres of bus lanes, renovating over 5,000 bus stops and ensuring that 98% of the transit fleet servicing city routes is wheelchair-accessible. In addition to bus related initiatives, Moscow has also put into place measures for paid car parking, innovative ticketing, governance reform in public transport, car sharing and taxi reform, and the development of cycling, which have all helped reduce the number of cars in central Moscow by 25%.
