Academy Congress to tackle innovation

Busworld will be back in Turkey for the 6th
time from 14th to 17th of April 2016. The event will take place at Istanbul
Expo Center and will gather more than 150 local and international
exhibitors. IRU in collaboration with Busworld Academy will organise the
congress entitled “Moving towards a sustainable bus and coach
future”.

Smart road charges electric buses while
driving
ElectRoad’s approach proposes to forget about the expensive and heavy
batteries that make the shift to electric transportation difficult.
Israel’s ElectRoad has developed a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT)
system that powers the vehicles wirelessly from the road.

Istanbul
Electricity, Tramway and Tunnel General Management (IETT) won yet another
prize for innovation during the “Turkey Innovation Week” held in
Istanbul in December last year. IETT came first in the category “Culture
and Organisation of Innovation”. Just a few months before, IETT was also
receiving the “Bus Excelence Award” from IRU.

Commuting by bus is
around 55% cheaper than the same commute by car according to a national
study carried out by Stagecoach Group, one of the UK’s biggest bus and
coach operators. On average, this saves passengers more than £ 90 per
month and around £ 1,000 per year.

The 12-metre long buses
are designed to offer customers an improved journey experience. The
interior is spacious, with more pedestal-free seats and USB charging points
for passengers.

data published by the German Federal Statistics Agency, the intercity coach
market registered a growth rate of 25% in 2015 compared to 2014. This
growth is 6 times higher than the second best, air transport.

The recently developed
solar bus, manufactured by Uganda’s Kiira Motors, has two batteries and
one of them can be charged by the solar panels placed on the roof of the
vehicle. Kayoola, the prototype electric bus, was presented in Kampala and
is described by its makers as being Africa’s first solar bus.
